Bread Machine Basics

A bread machine does the heavy lifting, but the small checks still matter. This is the quick-start guide I wish came taped to the lid.

Start With The Manual

Every machine has its own ingredient order, loaf-size settings, crust settings, and cycle names. EveryLoaf recipes are written for a 1kg loaf by default, but your machine gets the final say.

Check The Dough Early

After 5 to 10 minutes, look for a smooth, slightly tacky ball. Dry and crumbly? Add water one teaspoon at a time. Wet and slumping? Add flour one tablespoon at a time.

Use The Right Yeast

Instant yeast is the easiest choice for most bread machines. If your manual asks for active dry yeast, follow the manual and adjust the method as needed.

Let Bread Cool

Fresh bread is loud in the best way, but cooling helps the crumb set. For sandwich loaves, wait at least one hour before slicing.

One useful habit

Write down the tiny adjustments that worked for your machine: a spoon of water, a lighter crust, a shorter delay timer. Those notes become your house loaf.
