Ultimate Bread Machine Beginner Guide

New to bread machines? Start here. This guide explains loaf sizes, ingredient order, yeast, crust settings, dough checks, and how to make your first reliable bread machine loaf.

Choose the right loaf size

Most EveryLoaf recipes use a 1kg loaf as the default. If your machine is smaller or larger, use the closest loaf-size setting and check the manual before increasing quantities.

Check dough after 5 to 10 minutes

The dough should form a smooth, slightly tacky ball. Add water by the teaspoon if dry, or flour by the tablespoon if wet.

Use instant yeast

Instant yeast is the easiest option for most bread machines. If your machine manual asks for active dry yeast, follow that guidance.

Beginner-friendly recipes to try

Start with bread machine white bread, soft sandwich bread, whole wheat bread, or pizza dough. These recipes teach you how your machine handles hydration, flour, and rise time.
